An 18-year-old Clinton Township man was arraigned Monday on two felony charges stemming from a that claimed his passenger's life.
Gavin Enright was charged in 41B District Court with first-degree fleeing and eluding and operating while intoxicated causing death. Each charge carries a maximum penalty of 15 years imprisonment upon conviction. Enright was held in lieu of a $150,000 bond, according to the Macomb County Sheriff's Office.
In the early Friday morning hours, police say Enright's father contacted the Sheriff's Office to report his son was driving a 1999 GMC Yukon without a license. Police found the SUV moving slowly without lights on around 3:10 a.m. in Harrison Township. When deputies attempted to pull over the Yukon, Enright sped up and tried to get onto Interstate 94 from the Metro Parkway ramp, the Sheriff's Office said.
He then lost control of the SUV, causing it to roll over multiple times. The crash killed 21-year-old passenger Donald Smelser-Emerson of Harrison Township, police said.
Deputies are continuing their investigation.
