Teens Involved in I-94 Crash; One Dead, One Critically Injured

A 19-year-old driver died after an accident in Chesterfield Township just after midnight, police said Monday.

A 19-year-old St. Clair Shores driver died and her passenger was critically injured very early Monday in an accident on Interstate 94 near 23 Mile in Chesterfield Township, police said.

The passenger is a 19-year-old man from Algonac. Their identities were not immediately released.

Their car was struck while sitting disabled in the eastbound lanes of I-94 after crashing into a guard rail a short time earlier.

According to Chesterfield police, at about 12:20 a.m. Monday the 19-year-old woman's vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed when she lost control and crashed into the guard rail.

The then-disabled vehicle sat in the eastbound lanes of the expressway, police said. A 27-year-old Chesterfield driver, who was unaware of the accident moments before, crashed into the vehicle. The Chesterfield driver and his 26-year-old female passenger from Macomb Township suffered minor injuries, according to a news release from Chesterfield Township Detective Sgt. Deron Myers.

The investigation is ongoing as police say speed and alcohol are factors under consideration at this time.
