Tip Leads New Baltimore Police to Suspected Robber

After police released a surveillance image of a man accused of breaking into someone's home and stealing her purse, a New Baltimore man was arrested.

A 34-year-old New Baltimore man is expected to be arraigned Monday on charges he broke into an occupied home, stole a purse and used ATM cards in the city, police said Thursday.

At about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, police arrested the man after receiving a tip from a citizen following the release of surveillance images of the suspected intruder. The man was found in possession of the stolen ATM cards, according to police.

He is being lodged in Macomb County Jail on a $50,000 cash/surety bond. An arraignment is slated for Monday in 42-2 District Court.

The arrest stems from a crime that took place early Tuesday at the 3000 block of Brooke Court. A home owner reported to police he was awakened by the closing of his kitchen door. When he checked out the home, he realized his wife's purse was missing. It is believed the intruder came in through an open garage, police said.

Within an hour of the intrusion, a man in his 20s or 30s was spotted on surveillance video outside Huntington National Bank on Washington Street. Police released still images of the tape to the media, leading someone to identify the suspect to police.

The suspect was able to withdrawal money with the stolen ATM cards by using the victim's PIN number. It is unclear how he had that personal bank information.

New Baltimore police Chief Tim Wiley said Thursday it is possible the robber knew the victims or that the PIN number was inside the stolen purse.
