Two Suspects in Custody for Arson at Poncho's in New Baltimore

The suspects are expected to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in 42-2 District Court, police said.

Two New Baltimore men are scheduled to face charges today in connection to the intentionally set fire at Poncho's Mexican Restaurant on Green Street, according to police.

The suspects, ages 27 and 33, were taken into custody Wednesday evening in New Baltimore following an extensive investigation into the Sunday morning fire at the popular eatery, Police Chief Tim Wiley said.

"Their connection to the restaurant at this point is strictly a criminal matter," Wiley said of the pair expected to also face arson, breaking and entering and theft charges.

"Detectives, at this point in the investigation, have indicated that family members and restaurant owners do not appear to have any known relationship ties to the suspects that are in custody," New Baltimore police also said in a prepared statement.

A 44-year-old Dearborn Heights man, who was not immediately believed to be connected to the arson, was arrested for a parole absconding violation during the course of the Poncho's investigation, Wiley said.

City police said they worked with Utica police and Michigan State Police fire investigators and K-9 team, with support from the New Baltimore Fire Department.
