A worker at a Macomb County auto supplier was crushed to death this morning in an industrial accident.

The 23-year-old worker from Washington Township, whose name has not been released, was crushed when he tried to clear an obstruction from a press machine at Colonial Plastics in Shelby Township, the Detroit Free Press reports. The accident occurred about 6 a.m.

Police Capt. Stephen Stanbury said the accident is the first he’s ever heard of that caused serious injury or death at the facility, located in the 51000 block of Filomena Drive near 23 Mile and Schoenherr.

The man was dead when police and fire personnel arrived at the plant. Occupational Health and Safety Administration were on the scene.

Stanbury said he’s not sure what caused the machine the man was working on the jam, but his death “is totally an accident.”
