Blue Angels to Fly in 2014 Selfridge Air Show Under Macomb County Native's Command

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels will headline the Selfridge Air Show and open house when the event returns to Selfridge Air National Guard Base in 2014.

A familiar face will be in command of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels flight demonstration team when the squadron returns to headline the air show at Selfridge Air National Guard Base in 2014.

Cmdr. Tom Frosch, a native of Clinton Township, took command of the squadron in November. A 1988 graduate of Fraser High School and 1992 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Frosch is a decorated combat veteran, serving in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom.

In his new capacity, Frosch assumes command of more than 100 sailors and marines who comprise the Blue Angels squadron and ground crew.

Local residents will next have a chance to see the squadron in action in 2014 when they perform in the Selfridge Air Show.

While the air show typically held every two-years at the Harrison Township base, 127th Wing officials announced it will not be offered in 2013 because of operational mission requirements.

“Being able to demonstrate our capabilities, personnel and equipment at an air show is a high priority at Selfridge, but our first responsibility always remains being ready and available to respond to the directions of our commander in chief,” said Col. Michael Thomas, commander of the 127th Wing, which is the host unit at Selfridge, in a release.

The 2014 show – held Aug. 30-31 – will be the first time the Blue Angles have performed at Selfridge in five years.

“We are very pleased that our next air show will feature one of the military’s premier demonstration teams in the Blue Angels, along with the full range of aircraft stationed here at Selfridge,” said Maj. Brian Wyrzykowski, a Selfridge pilot who will serve as the 2014 air show director, in a release.

The Selfridge Military and Air Museum is available for tours April to October and is also available by appointment for tour groups. The museum features nearly three dozen military aircraft, three cockpit simulators along with uniforms, weapon systems and military artifacts.

The 127th Wing is also developing a limited public tour program of the base, according to base officials, with details to be released in 2013. Details will be  available at www.127wg.ang.af.mil. Information on the museum is available at (586) 239-5035.
