Chesterfield, New Baltimore See High Absentee Ballot Return

More than 70 percent of the absentee voters have turned in their ballot by Friday morning.

Election Day is Tuesday but thousands of Chesterfield Township and New Baltimore voters have already cast their ballots.

Each community has seen more than 70 percent of issued absentee ballots returned by the end of this week, with more expected to flow in by Tuesday night.

"We couldn't ask for a better return on our absentees," New Baltimore Clerk Marcia Shinska said.

By Thursday morning, there were 1,099 returned ballots out of 1,462 issued and the city expects about 75-76 percent of total registered voter turnout on Tuesday, she said. 

In Chesterfield Township, 3,875 ballots were returned Friday morning out of 5,414 issued, Deputy Clerk Eric Wurmlinger said.

"We are literally issuing three ballots every five minutes," he said, adding that about 20 percent of the total registered voters are expected to vote absentee.

The township anticipates about 72-75 percent turnout Tuesday of registered voters at the polls.

Chesterfield Township and New Baltimore tends to fare well in Macomb County election turnout. In the last presidential election November 2008, 71.8 percent of registered voters cast their ballots in the township while 75.7 turned up in New Baltimore. The lowest percentage was in Mount Clemens at 59.8 percent and the highest was 78.6 percent in Bruce Township, according to county results

Who can vote absentee?

According to the Macomb County Election Department, you are eligible to vote absentee if:

  • You are unable to vote without help.
  • You are 60 years of age and up.
  • You expect to be absent from your city or township on election day.
  • You are in jail, awaiting arraignment or trial.
  • You have been assigned to work as a precinct inspector in a precinct other than where you are registered.
  • Or you are unable to attend the polls because of religious beliefs.

Where to get ballots?

To obtain absentee ballots Saturday, visit New Baltimore City Hall from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 36535 Green St., New Baltimore or Chesterfield Township Offices from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at  47275 Sugarbush Rd.

Eligible voters may also vote by absent voter ballot in person at your local clerk's office until 4 p.m. Monday. All absentee voter ballots must be turned into the local clerk's office no later than 8 p.m. Tuesday.
