Chesterfield Township officials are mulling over ways to avoid police layoffs.

Township Supervisor Michael Lovelock said at the Tuesday night Board of Trustees meeting that the reductions were necessary because a tax increase proposal failed in November.

The board majority ultimately decided to place a moratorium on the layoffs for up to 90 days while officials work on alternative solutions. Lovelock and Trustee Christine Bell cast the dissenting votes.
