Mayor Says Parks and Rec Postion Will Likely be Filled

New Baltimore Mayor Larry Smith said Friday city officials and Assistant Parks and Recreation Director Carlos Aprea met Feb. 29, resulting in Aprea no longer working in the city.

A meeting between New Baltimore city administration and Aprea took place Wednesday, resulting in Aprea no longer working with the city, Smith said.

"The only thing that I am going to say is on the 29th of February, there was a meeting with Carlos and the city administration," Smith said. "As a result of that meeting, the decision was reached that he would not continue on."

Smith declined to elaborate on the issue.

Aprea did not return calls by Friday morning for comment.

On Thursday, word of the staffing changes surfaced.

"Yes, the official comment was he was let go," Parks and Recreation Commissioner Tom Hepp said Thursday night. Hepp directed further questions to the mayor's office.

Last month, when a new Parks and Recreation director was hired, Smith–who selected Aprea for the position two years ago–said Aprea would keep his position.
