Open Burning Rules in Chesterfield, New Baltimore

Ordinances differ in each community. See the guidelines here.

While limited burning of yard waste such as brush, leaves, branches and grass clippings is allowed in Chesterfield Township with permits and restrictions, New Baltimore strictly prohibits it.

New Baltimore Fire Chief Ken Lawfield said this week he wants property owners to know that such open burning of yard waste is illegal in the city and could pose serious fire hazards. The city guidelines allow bonfires, burning of stumps inside pits and seasoned firewood with permits obtained in advance, according to its ordinance.

The Chesterfield Township ordinance allows the open burning of brush, tree stumps, branches, hedge clippings, leaves and grass clippings from May 1-21 and Oct. 10-Nov. 15 each year with permits.

"The fire chief will be allowed to alter dates due to weather conditions. An application for a permit shall be submitted not more than one business day before the intended open burning, and in the case of a bonfire, not less than two business days before the intended open burning to allow pre-inspection of the proposed bonfire site by the fire department," the document on the community website states.
