Anchor Bay Prepares Kindergarteners With Bus Safety

Parents and children learn about riding the bus this week.

Anchor Bay School District parents and incoming kindergarten and Young 5 students learned about bus safety this week at district elementary schools.

Children were given a book entitled Alexander Loves the Bus while parents and guardians watched an informational video and heard from staff members in the transportation department. Additionally, bus drivers took the kids and adults on a brief bus ride.

  • Drivers have been through training, background checks and are subject to random drug and alcohol testing.
  • Children should be at the bus stop about 10 minutes before scheduled pickup.
  • They should wait for the bus in a safe, designated place and be alert to traffic.
  • No eating or drinking allowed on the bus.
  • Hands and any carried items should remain on laps.
  • Possessions should be kept in book bags.
  • Kindergarten students are generally seated in the front of the bus near the driver.
  • Kids should take 10 giant steps away from the bus as they exit.
  • Kids should wait for the bus driver to wave for them to go before crossing the street.
  • Parents of kindergarten students need to be visible to the bus driver at drop off. If an older sibling will be watching out for them, parents can give a note declaring that to the driver.

In other school news, Principal Marie DeWitte will become director of elementary education for the district in light of Ken Krause's retirement. Yolanda White, who served as assistant principal at , will take over as principal at the Chesterfield Township elementary school.
