Anchor Bay's Kachalla Has Speed, Spirit

Anchor Bay sophomore track star Kayla Kachalla has an upbeat season.

Kayla Kachalla has been on track this season with speed and spirit.

The sophomore had an outstanding performance May 17 at the dual meet against Sterling Heights. Kachalla placed first in the 800-meter run, the 1,600 run and the 1,600- and 3200-relay teams.

She placed fourth in the 800 run at regionals and her 3,200-relay team placed third. She was a member of the Tars' state qualifying 3,200-relay team in 2010 as a freshman.

"Kayla has been a standout for us this season," Anchor Bay track coach Dan Campbell said. "She did not qualify for the state meet this year, but ... she will be there next year."

Statistics aside, what makes Kachalla stand out is her positive spirit and smile.

"Kayla is a spirited young lady," Anchor Bay assistant girls track coach Leslie Hawkins said. "She is always upbeat and excited and is a great role model for all of her teammates. She is also a great student athlete and is dedicated to being an exceptional runner, not just an ordinary runner."

Coach Campbell concurs.

"The only time Kayla is not smiling is when she is catching her breath after a race," Campbell said. "She is a joy to coach and is a great team member. No one can ever be down when Kayla is around."
