ABS Board Honors Retirees, Expels Student on Weapon Allegation

The district Board of Education meeting Wednesday also touched on state-sponsored safety lessons for elementary students.

Anchor Bay School District officials honored 19 retirees Wednesday night for their service during a ceremony before the Board of Education meeting.

"We have a lot of experienced people working for us and that is part of the reason our students become so successful," ABS Superintendent Leonard Woodside said. "And, I want to thank them for their years of service."

Among the people honored were cafeteria cooks, bus drivers, and Naldrett Elementary Principal Kathy Markel. Many of them retired at the end of last school year.

Student expelled for allegedly having weapon

Board President Steve Mittelstadt included a student expulsion for the alleged possession of a weapon in school as a last-minute meeting agenda item. The board voted unanimously to expel the student. Parents of the student were notified but failed to attend the meeting, according to Mittelstadt. No further information about the incident or student was released at the meeting.

Safety lessons for elementary schools

Marie DeWitte, elementary education director for the district, showed the board a slideshow about student safety lessons. Among them were: teaching first-graders what an emergency is and how to report one, educating third-graders  about different types of emergencies and telling fifth-graders what to do during natural disasters and dangerous situations. Properly washing hands, nutrition and other health lessons were also mentioned during the presentation.
