Four girls applied for this year’s pageant. However, the event could not continue as scheduled because some contestants did not attend the required interview with the judges last Thursday.

Teenage apathy at its best. Maybe the interviews should have been held via text message. Or Facebook. Sort of anti-climatic for the winner. Sorta like winning by forfeit. At least she had the motivation to comply with the requirements unlike the rest of them.

Jennifer is a very lovely young woman and I couldn't think of anyone more deserving to win the title. She is hard working, dedicated, loving, and very caring. She didn't win by forfeit. She won because she showed the judges that she was worthy. She deserves it and I am very honored to be her court member. We are looking forward to all the events and parades this year and continue being a positive role model for young women.

As the pageant chairperson since its inception, this is not the one and only time that our pageant has been changed at the last minute due to a lack of participation. I am very proud of the young lady who has been crowned Miss Chesterfield 2011 and her court members who I know will assist her in doing an awesome job. It is unfortunate that some young people do not take the responsibility for their lack of courtesy when it comes to people counting on them being a part of a pageant. By this statement, I mean they do not have the sense to let the planner of an event know that they have chosen to withdraw their intentions of entering that event. This not only puts a bad taste in the mouths of those who are involved such as the judges, the young ladies who have done what they were expected to become candidates, the planner and especially the families of those who have brought up responsible adults. Again, shame on those entrants who did not call and make their intentions known, but most importantly congratulations to Miss Chesterfield 2011 Jennifer Gerlando and her court members Lindsay Beltowski and Stephanie Hoppe. I know I can count on these young ladies because they did the right thing from the beginning. Just a note: This was not the first time this has happened and it won't be the last. God Bless+ you fine young ladies, you all are to be commended.
