Whiz Kid: Osterman Wins Poetry Slam

Ashley Elementary fifth-grader Hope Osterman placed first in the school's poetry competition and is a straight-A student.

Whiz Kid:  Hope Osterman

Age: 11

Accomplishments: Hope Osterman is an outgoing, energetic fifth-grader at . On June 6, she won the school's fifth annual Poetry Slam competition after placing second last year. She performed a spirited presentation of Shel Silverstein's Sarah Cynthia Sylvia Stout Would Not Take the Garbage Out, complete with wireless mic and props.

Hope has earned all A's during her years at Ashley and will attend next year. 

"Hope was in my classroom last year and she gobbled up books on a daily basis," Ashley Elementary fourth-grade teacher Kevin Grammens said. "She is one of those all-around amazing students. She always takes things to the nth degree, she goes overboard. She's very bright and has great parents supporting her. She is going to go places."

Outside of the classroom, Hope is an active member of the choir at in New Baltimore. She also loves to dance and play softball.

Key to Success:  "I believe Hope's key to success is her work ethic," Hope's father Mike Osterman said. "For example, yesterday we came home from a pool party and our family was all tired from the sun. Hope took it upon herself to practice her poetry presentation and tend to other studies to get ready for today. She's also had a great series of teachers that have helped her to develop her writing skills and her love of poetry, like Mr. Grammens."
