Anchor Bay Grinds Out Victory over L'Anse Creuse

The Anchor Bay defense pitches a shutout in the second half to hold on to a 17-7 triumph over the Lancers in a high school football game Thursday night.

Thanks to a strong defensive effort in the second half, the football team defeated L'Anse Creuse 17-7 on Thursday in the Tars' home opener.

The Anchor Bay Tars offense started fast and seemed ready to put some serious points on the board tonight after a 57-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Anthony Misiewicz to Nick Black gave the Tars a 7-0 lead within the first two minutes of the game.

The next scoring would not take place until 2:54 of the second quarter when L'Anse Creuse tied the game on a beautiful five-yard touchdown toss from Jake Vawter, who lofted the ball to the corner of the end zone for wideout Josh McCarthy. McCarthy would have three receptions for 45 yards on the drive leading to a 7-7 halftime score.

Anchor Bay would add a field goal at the 7:03 mark of the third quarter when Justin Nelson booted a 34-yard field goal, putting the Tars back on top 10 to 7.

That was all the Anchor Bay defense needed as they would hold the L'Anse Creuse offense in check most the second half.

The stingy Tars defense posted a shutout in the second half, and a 15-yard touchdown scamper from Kyle Head with just over a minute remaining proved enough for Anchor Bay to hold on for the victory.

"I think it was a great show of our kids heart and again hats off to L'Anse Creuse because they played an extremely tough game and we were just able to get those couple extra points on the board." said Anchor Bay coach Phil Latona.

Anchor Bay goes for two in a row next Friday at home against undefeated Port Huron.
