Poll: Are Relaxed Fireworks Laws Causing Headaches?

Chesterfield and New Baltimore police say they're fielding daily complaints from residents about nighttime disturbances.

On the heels of vendors and customers taking advantage of , scores of Chesterfield and New Baltimore residents are complaining of major headaches.

From Fido barking in hysteria to babies wailing at night, police are fielding calls from many unhappy households.

"It is definitely a problem," New Baltimore Police Chief Tim Wiley said Monday. "We are getting daily calls from these disturbances in the middle of the night where people feel like they’re in a war zone."

Chesterfield Township police say they're also hearing from residents more this summer now that bottle rockets, Roman candles and other flying devices are sold legally.

Officers responding to the complaints do not have much control over the situation, but could enforce a disturb the peace ordinance in certain cases. They also can check to ensure other laws, unrelated to fireworks, are not broken, such as underage drinking, police said.
