Firstly, there are NO TESTS whatever to prove any wound is a Brown Recluse bite. Secondly, yourRead More doctor almost certainly has no training or experience in Brown Recluse bites. His "expert" opinion is based on looking at pictures, same as you. Or, maybe during training, another doctor told him something was a Brown Recluse bite, based on pictures HE saw. In Michigan, the county ME doesn't have to have any special training, any doctor can be one. Most of the pictures on the internet are not even spider bites. There are very few doctors with the experience to confidently diagnose a Brown Recluse, especially without finding a dead spider. Finally, death from the spider bite is rare. Some clues like renal failure, clotting failure and blood cell breakdown might be present. Demonstrating something like that AFTER death just isn't going to be part of a routine autopsy, if one was even done. Maybe it was a Massasauga bite, at least they exist in Michigan. Or maybe a staph infection, which would look like a marble, very possibly be fatal and is quite common.

A white-nosed coati similar to the one pictured above was euthanized so it could be tested for rabies after biting a Warren resident who tried to corral the animal after it escaped from a neighbor’s garage. (Photo: @NamdurApi via Flickr)

There ARE other methods to test an animal for Rabies: Rabies Diagnosis in Animals: Based on routineRead More public health surveillance and pathogenesis studies, we have learned that it is not necessary to euthanize and test all animals that bite or otherwise potentially expose a person to rabies. For animals with a low probability of rabies such as dogs, cats, and ferrets, observation periods (10 days) may be appropriate to rule out the risk of potential human rabies exposure. Consultation with a local or state health official following a potential exposure can help determine the best course of action based on current public health recommendations. BioPro Rabies ELISA Ab kit was developed and validated for detection of rabies antibodies in domesticated and wild carnivores. In comparison to “golden standard” methods like FAVN or RFFIT the use of BioPro RABIES ELISA Ab kit is much easier, rapid and convenient. Tests that do not require euthanasia can be used to examine serum, spinal fluid, and saliva, but none of them can rule out rabies with 100 percent certainty. These tests are used only in humans and animals that cannot be euthanized.

Valeria, your experience is somewhat different from mine. Watching that suffering they went through convinced me that the end of a life is a personal choice that belongs to the person who is living that life and no one else on earth.

For one who has a family member just diagnosed as terminal (many problems par for the course for aRead More 92 year old) if we had such a law permitting assisted suicide, I'd say proceed with caution based on our experience of the last couple days. Loved one requested the "plug pulled" many times (actually no plugs or machines simply occasional respiratory mask as breathing aid) but changed mind yesterday, and is entering hospice care. He is in no pain (yet), condition has actually improved and has had the opportunity for many family members to come and visit. I sense a winding up of a life well-lived, and the opportunity for many "I love you's". This would have been missed if his request had been immediately jumped upon and was legal. Don't know what the next few weeks will bring, there may be a time when the suffering will be great and wish for euthanasia, but glad at least of the past couple days.
Bill July 10, 2014 at 08:41 am
Euthanasia is a means of respecting the sanctity and quality of life while providing an individualRead More the choice to die with grace and dignity. It is a very personal choice, but a choice that an individual should legally be permitted to make - provided of course, there is a protocol established. What is called "palliative" of "comfort" care is for the most part also a myth.Read More Pain killing drugs themselves often have horrible side effects including horrific dreams and then comes the time they simply do not work and who is there to suction out your throat when you cannot communicate that you are choking on your own secretions? This eventually results in what is called the "death rattle" a horrible term that is still used today by both nurses and doctors. A cardiologist once told me after I brought in a friend of mine to Beaumont that after the third rattle there is little hope, and it is only recently that some kind doctors are informing people that CPR on the elderly invariably breaks the ribs and causes pain in a knowingly futile effort which only prolongs the dying process.
