The grand opening for aquatic center renovations took place Wednesday night in New Baltimore.
Fitness on land and water is now feasible at Anchor Bay Schools Aquatic Center in New Baltimore. The center, boasting an indoor heated pool, now claims a fitness room, child-watch play area and so-called fun room for parties, classes and meetings. The renovations began soon after voters approved the aquatic center millage in spring and were unveiled Wednesday night. Anchor Bay band members kicked off the ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by Superintendent Leonard Woodside, school board members, student swimmers, community officials and district employees. The voters of New Baltimore, Chesterfield and Lenox Townships were in favor of the Aquatic Center millage increase May 8.
The tax increase for the Anchor Bay Schools Aquatic Center has passed. Voters who headed to the polls Tuesday voted 'yes' on a three-year levy to keep the aquatic center afloat, passing the decision by a 56.5%-43.5% margin overall. With all 17 precincts reporting, 1,850 people voted yes to approve the millage, and 1,425 people voted no. A total of 3,279 people out of 22,178 registered voters cast ballots Tuesday for a voter turnout of 14.78 percent. The tax will cost homeowners an average of about $30 per year. With upward of $430,000 needed to maintain the center, used by students and residents, the millage increase will bring in a total of approximately $518,000 the first year. It’s sink or swim time for the Anchor Bay Aquatic Center, as the Anchor Bay School District is asking voters to help keep the facility afloat. The public will get its chance to decide the center’s fate in a special election to be held May 8, with a three-year, half-mill levy on the ballot. The exact wording of the ballot is as follows: "MILLAGE PROPOSAL TO PROVIDE FUNDS TO OPERATE A SYSTEM OF PUBLIC RECREATION AND PLAYGROUNDS.
