Law Enforcement Academy for Seniors Accepting Registrations

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for the next Law Enforcement Academy for Seniors.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office is accepting registrations the next Law Enforcement Academy for Seniors. The five-week series of classes allows seniors to learn about the operations of the Macomb County Sheriff's Office and its different divisions. Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham is presenting academy with the with the assistance of the Macomb County Senior Citizen Services Department. Visiting Former L'Anse Creuse Student Causes School Lockdown

Three L'Anse Creuse Schools were closed Tuesday after a report of a suspicious person in L'Anse Creuse High School.

Classes were canceled Tuesday morning at three L'Anse Creuse after a person in military gear was seen in L'Anse Creuse High School, according to a report by WJBK-TV. L'Anse Creuse High School, L'Anse Creuse Middle School-Central and Graham Elementary were all closed as the Macomb County Sheriff's Office investigated the report. High school students en route to the school via bus transported to a “safe location” until the decision was made to close the school, according to Kelly Allen, director for Public and Community Relations.  Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham told the television station that the man was a 21-year-old former student and airman at Selfridge Air National Guard Base. Anthony Wickersham Begins First Full Term as Macomb County Sheriff

Anthony Wickersham took office Jan. 1 and began his first full term as the Macomb County Sheriff.

The start of the new year marked the beginning of the latest chapter in the law enforcement career of Anthony Wickersham. Wickersham, 51, joined the Macomb County Sheriff's Department in 1986 as a correctional officer and has held every rank in the department including sheriff—a position he was appointed to in 2011. The 46th Macomb County Sheriff ran for re-election in November and defeated Steve Thomas to win a full, four-year term. "You really do appreciate what a candidate has to go through to get elected," said Wickersham, of his run for office which focused on his career in the department. Macomb County Sheriff: Outreach Needed for Heroin Prevention

Sheriff Anthony Wickersham says some heroin users in the county are as young as 13.

Heroin cases in Macomb County have changed--and are more numerous. According to Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, many people who had heroin overdoses 15 to 20 years ago were “people living on the streets that would shoot it up.” But that changed about seven years ago when heroin use started to rise in Macomb. “Now you’re going in homes with good family structures, good students, star athletes, and we’re losing a lot of young people there,” Wickersham said. To decrease heroin use in Macomb County, he said, arrested people need a good support system, so they don’t end up using again after they leave jail. “We’ve tried over the years to arrest our way out of this problem, and it really doesn’t happen,” he said. “We’ve got to try to get out there …

Team Hackel Trounces LCN Alumni in Midnight Madness Flag Football Game

Macomb County's elected officials took on Crusader coaches and alumni Sunday night as part of the school's Midnight Madness kickoff to the 2012 football season.

The game may or may not have been rigged, but it was Team Hackel for the win when Macomb County elected officials took on L'Anse Creuse North coaches and alumni Sunday night in a fund-raiser game for the Crusaders 2012 football season. Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith and Macomb County Commissioner Bob Smith were only a few of the county officials to participate in the school's first-ever Midnight Madness celebration. "It was one of my weaker moments," Hackel joked of agreeing to play in the game. Macomb Township Resident Enters Race for Sheriff

Greg Stone filed paperwork to run for county sheriff.

Greg Stone has entered the race to become the Macomb County Sheriff. Stone, 58, who retired last year after 35 years in the sheriff’s department, filed paperwork to run for county sheriff, according to a report in the Detroit Free Press.   Anthony Wickersham was appointed Macomb County Sheriff in December 2010. Wickersham has filed paperwork to run for re-election.

Graphic Distracted Driving Crash Video Honors Macomb Teen

A new, realistic video of the dangers of distracted driving was released by the Traffic Improvement Association of Michigan and produced by the Michigan Department of Transportation. The video is part of a campaign named after a Romeo High School teen.

The Traffic Improvement Association has partnered with the Michigan Department of Transportation to release a graphic and realistic driver safety video and public service announcement to detail the dangers of distracted driving. The video depicts a fatal car accident caused by distracted driving involving teens. Some of the teens in the cars have open wounds with blood dripping down their faces and arms. They are seen being removed from the cars by emergency personnel. A driver of one of the cars is pronounced dead on the scene. "Distracted driving is a serious, life-threatening behavior that steals loved ones from us and puts innocent drivers in danger every time they hit the road," said Jim Santilli, executive director of TIA. Macomb's Top Law Enforcers Partner to Reduce Drunk Driving

Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham, Prosecutor Eric Smith and Macomb Traffic Safety Association work together to reduce the number drunk drivers on the road this holiday season.

Macomb County's top law enforcement officials are urging motorists to call 911 if they see a drunk drivers on the road. Macomb County Prosecutor Eric Smith and Sheriff Anthony Wickersham came together Monday to kick off the "Call 911" campaign to report drunk drivers. "It is incumbent on all of us to help law enforcement find drunk drivers," Smith said. "If you see somebody that is  all over the roads, endangering other citizens, please pick up your phone and call 911. When we all work together, we can make our streets a safter palce to be."
