New Baltimore to Celebrate New Harbor, Patrol Boat

Public boat docks and a patrol boat will be celebrated during June dedications.

New Baltimore will celebrate its new public boat docks and security patrol boat during two June ceremonies at Walter and Mary Burke Park. The events, at 11 a.m. June 17 and 4 p.m. June 18, mark a multi-agency effort formed by New Baltimore with the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office, Detroit-Wayne Port Authority and Department of Homeland Security/FEMA, according to New Baltimore Police Chief Tim Wiley. The harbor, which was constructed during winter, will include 10 finger docks allowing 16 boats. The docks will be along Anchor Bay in the so-called old beach area of the park near the water plant. New Baltimore Mayor Expects Bid From Mystery Developer

Mayor Larry Smith said he hopes to have prime waterfront property in New Baltimore developed in the near future.

An unidentified developer plans to submit a bid on waterfront property in downtown New Baltimore, Mayor Larry Smith said Monday night. "He is preparing to give us a bid on the property as it stands right now," Smith told city council without disclosing the name of the mystery buyer. That potential offer on the city-owned property, including the former police station on Front Street, comes on the heels of a majority of city council rejecting Smith's request for commercial appraisals. Last week, the mayor said he was meeting with the developer in hopes the failed motion would not scare him off. Smith has previously cited his vision for the waterfront land is to lure locals and visitors with development. Several new additions are anticipated …

Love the idea of bringing the waterfront into the 21st century. Good for citizens and good for boater/customers who will use boat docks and ( what are finger wells ?) My big worry is the pollution spills of boat gasoline and oil into the swimming area, But more importantly, I am concerned with the potential poisoning into our New Baltimore drinking water. How close is our fresh water intake to …   more ›
