While Ann Romney has taken to the presidential campaign trail to support her husband Mitt Romney, she also has rallied her efforts for another cause: breast cancer awareness. Ann Romney, a native of Bloomfield Hills and a student at Cranbrook, is a breast cancer survivor. In 2008, Ann Romney had surgery to remove a precancerous lump from her breast, according to the Boston Globe. Mitt Romney told CNN that Barack Obama, at the time the president-elect, called to offer his prayers to the Romney family. Studies have shown that early detection of breast cancer improves the chances of a cure. That in itself is the most important reason to make an appointment today for a breast exam or mammogram. “Early detection is key. The smaller that a breast cancer is detected, the less likely it is to metastasize or spread to other organs or the bones. The earlier a breast (cancer) is discovered, the more likely the chance for a cure,” said Dr. Jeff Falk, a physician on staff at St. John Medical Center in Macomb Township. The New Baltimore Edible Arrangements store is featuring the Heels for Healing fruit bouquets and pink chocolate drizzled strawberries in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The two store owners will contribute 10 percent of their Heels for Healing proceeds to the National Foundation of Breast Cancer Awareness for education and treatment. The fun pink chocolate covered high heel shaped pineapple can also be sold separately as a pop for a fun snack, according to a news release.

Macomb County's going pink Oct. 13 for a walk to raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.
Pink will be a hot color Saturday morning. Walkers from all over Macomb County will take to the streets Saturday morning in downtown Mount Clemens to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research and support. The American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk is a noncompetitive, inspirational event, taking place at 8 a.m. Oct. 13, 2012, starting at 1 Crocker Blvd. in downtown Mount Clemens. On Oct. 5, metro Detroit bakery-cafes, including the one at 23 Mile and Gratiot in Chesterfield Township, will hold a "Go Pink Day" to mark the 11th year of Panera Bread's October fundraising effort for breast cancer causes. The pink pizza box is back. Now in its fourth year, Hungry Howie’s "Love, Hope & Pizza" campaign is once again raising money and awareness for the fight against breast cancer. For every pizza purchased during the month of October, Hungry Howie’s will make a donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. In the last three years, Hungry Howie’s has raised almost $500,000 for the foundation. This year, the goal is to add another $250,000 to that total. You might be able to find help fighting breast cancer and other types of cancers at your local grocery store and fitness centers, according to the research findings of Dr. Marian Neuhouser, Ph.D, RD. Dr. Neuhouser is a nutritional epidemiologist with a background in nutritional sciences. She is an investigator at Seattle’s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Her research is focused on lifestyle factors such as nutrition and physical activity. Some factors may prevent breast and prostate cancer and improve survivorship in those diagnosed with cancer. Eight years ago when longtime New Baltimore resident Betsey Facione discovered she had breast cancer at age 54, she wasn't worried about her odds. After all, her mother and mother-in-law were diagnosed with the disease decades ago at the same time and went on to live another 40 and 35 years, respectively, with good health. "Because of their experiences, when the doctor told me I had it, I wasn't that concerned," Facione, a literacy consultant for Utica Community Schools, said Monday.
