For as long as she can remember, Nancy Czarny's mother has been giving her simple advice to get through life. "Do what you know is right" are the six simple words that Czarny, the random winner of Patch's 2012 Mother's Day Contest, remembers her mother saying most frequently. "That's what she would tell me when I was a young girl having problems with things at school or issues with friends or jobs, when I was older," recalls Czarny, of Chesterfield Township. "In essence, she was she telling me to follow my gut, do what I know is right." It's the same advice Czarny passes on to her 6-year-old daughter. "I tell her to be who she is. The Pirate Carrying a Mermaid Optical Illusion has been named Patch's Halloween Costume in America. Its creator -- and wearer -- will receive a $5,000 prize for having the most creative and innovative costume.

Ashley Playford dressed up as a pirate carrying a mermaid this Halloween. Well, actually, she dressed up as the mermaid. Well...Her creativity has earned her the title of Patch's Best Halloween Costume in America and a $5,000 grand prize. It was Playford's use of an optical illusion that won us over. Take a look at the photo she entered on Peekskill-Cortlandt Patch! Almost 4,000 Patch users entered the contest from Oct. 15 to Nov. 5, with costumes ranging from the Eiffel Tower and Honey Boo Boo to a flower pot and a clever interpretation of "binders full of women." National judges chose 1 finalist from each Patch state based on who had the most creative and innovative costume (we combined North Carolina & South Carolina for this contest…

You've no doubt glanced over at a driver next to you and see him texting. AT&T's "It Can Wait" campaign discourages the dangerous behavior. Distracted driving contributed to 5,474 traffic deaths in 2009 nationwide, and 3,986 accidents in Michigan last year. "Our goal is to save lives," AT&T Chairman & CEO Randall Stephenson said in a release. Patch.com in Michigan is partnering with AT&T to raise awareness about distracted driving.
