Biggby Opening Fulfills New Baltimore Coffee Craving

The coffee shop held a grand opening Tuesday on Green Street near Washington Street across from New Baltimore City Hall.

Two years in the making, Biggby Coffee held a grand opening Tuesday in New Baltimore. Owners Jim and Kathy Dehem, who are longtime New Baltimore residents, have said the city is a great place for the Michigan-based coffee chain. The franchise location is similar to other Biggby shops, featuring a slew of menu options such as coffees, smoothies, bagels and desserts. The New Baltimore coffee shop also has a drive-thru, free WI-FI and meeting area.

The coffee shop is located at 36540 Green Street near Washington in New Baltimore.

After two years and many setbacks, the Biggby Coffee in New Baltimore is percolating a Dec. 18 opening date. “From the beginning we knew New Baltimore would be a great place for Biggby and everyone here is just so excited. Driver Allegedly Dumpster Dives For Pills, Crashes Into Motorcyclist

The following information was supplied by police. Arrest information does not indicate convictions.

A 32-year-old man who crashed into a motorcyclist in New Baltimore was in possession of multiple illegal prescription pills, police said. At approximately 4:45 p.m. Sept. 28, the GMC truck driver was seen by other motorists swerving before changing lanes at the same time as a Harley Davidson driver on Green Street north of County Line and crashing into the motorcycle. The impact caused the motorcyclist to get thrown about 15 feet from his bike, fracturing his left foot, according to a New Baltimore police report. When approaching the truck driver, the officer noticed him slurring words with pinpoint pupils indicating drug use. He admitted to having two Vicodin pills in his vehicle. Sewer Drain Covers Lifted from New Baltimore Construction Site

The recent theft is the second one of its kind at the Family Dollar property.

For the second time, several sewer drain lids were snatched from a New Baltimore construction site, police said. Five covers, valued at approximately $1,200, were reported missing from the Family Dollar site on Green Street next to CVS. The lids were dropped off at the property Aug. 16, just days after the first set of covers were stolen, according to a police report. The lids had been placed at the front of the construction site about 15-20 feet away from Green Street. Police are investigating the thefts. Read more crime briefs here.

23 Mile and Jefferson Named Most Dangerous Intersection in New Baltimore

Check out SEMCOG's list of the top 10 most dangerous intersections in New Baltimore.

The 23 Mile Road and Jefferson intersection had the highest volume of crashes during a five-year period in New Baltimore, according to the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments' data from 2007-11. The annual average for that intersection was nearly 14 crashes, with the Green Street and County Line intersection rated second with about 11. The third highest-frequency crash intersection in New Baltimore is Green and Washington streets, with 10. Birch Street and 23 Mile came in fourth with an average of about 6, the statistics show. Construction is slated to take place over the next few months at Biggby Coffee on Green near Washington streets. The coffee shop is expected to open in October or November.

Plans that have long been brewing for a Biggby Coffee in New Baltimore moved forward Wednesday when owners closed on the Green Street property. "I can't believe how excited we are after two years," owner and longtime New Baltimore resident Jim Dehem said after unlocking the vacant building near Washington Street.
