Hats On! MCREST to Host Mad Hatter Tea Party on May 19

The first annual event will take place at the Cedar Glen Golf Club in New Baltimore on May 19.

Don't be late, late for a very important date. Everyone is invited May 19 to the first Mad Hatter Tea Party, sponsored by MCREST (Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team) at the Cedar Glen Golf Club in New Baltimore.  "We encourage mothers and daughters, sisters and friends and grandmothers to come and enjoy a day together," said Laurie Huff, MCREST Development Assistant, of the Alice in Wonderland themed event. Lunch, basket raffles, door prizes, entertainment and more will add to the fun and unexpectedness of the afternoon. Brief: Macomb County Homeless Families Get Help

MCREST receives a grant from United Way for childcare equipment.

Area homeless children will be better accommodated at local churches, thanks to a $10,400 grant awarded to Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team, also known as MCREST. The United Way money is to pay for portable cribs, child beds, high chairs, booster seats, linens, pillows and other childcare equipment. MCREST loans the equipment to churches that volunteer to serve the homeless in Macomb County. “This grant will boost MCREST’s capabilities to care for the increasing number of families with children in the homeless population,” newly appointed MCREST Director Angela Willis, of Chesterfield Township, said in a prepared statement Monday. “We need these items because sometimes our volunteer churches cannot accommodate children but …

Volunteers Count Homeless Residents In Macomb

"The new face of homelessness are people who are the victims of our economic situation in Southeast Michigan," says Trish Pearce, Macomb County Rotating Emergency Shelter Team.

Teams of volunteers set out at 4 a.m. Wednesday on a four-hour search to count the homeless population of  Macomb County. Carrie Fortune, continuum of care coordinator at Macomb County Community Services Agency, also heads the Macomb Homeless Coalition. The two groups work together on what is called a “point-in-time count” of the county’s homeless population. Fortune and her teams of volunteers search locations including hospitals, 24-hour stores and parks in carefully mapped out sections of the county from Roseville, to Warren, to Easpointe and other cities.  The last count, taken in 2009, found 1,176 homeless residents.  Fortune said the raw data from this year’s count will be available in a few days, but verification of official numbers…
