Big Daddy's Hydroponics is set to close March 10, 2012.
After attorneys on both sides of the ongoing Big Daddy's Hydroponics case reached an agreement in Macomb County Circuit Court, owner Rick Ferris read this letter Wednesday to Judge John Foster: Dear Honorable Judge Foster, After listening to the testimony from the city officials, Tuesday, February 28, 2012, and conversations with my attorneys and landlord, Pat Acciavatti, I agree with the city’s conclusion that we are not in compliance with the zoning. Therefore, I will withdraw from 52011 Gratiot Avenue, Chesterfield Twp. MI 48051. It was never my intention to break any law, local or state. I believe we follow the state law at all times and were given bad legal advice regarding local zoning. Although I firmly believe this case has never …

Atty. General Bill Schuette filed a motion to Macomb County Circuit Court Judge John Foster to enforce a previous order.
With civil and criminal hearings for Big Daddy's Hydroponics on the horizon, the Michigan Attorney General has filed another motion against the Chesterfield Township business. The document requests Macomb County Circuit Court Judge John Foster enforce a previous ruling against Big Daddy's Hydroponics. The judge initially sided with Chesterfield Township and the state by ordering the medical marijuana dispensary to close, but then clarified the ruling by allowing limited operations. That means the parties are to reappear Monday morning in the Mount Clemens court, according to Big Daddy's Management. Regarding Bill Schuette's motion calling for a permanent injunction and ban of medical marijuana sales, Big Daddy's owner Rick Ferris stated, "…

The controversial Chesterfield Township medical marijuana center is heading back to court Monday in Mount Clemens.
As Big Daddy's Hydroponics heads back to court Monday to fend off another attempt from the Michigan Attorney General to close the Chesterfield business, its owner says the business is being unfairly targeted. Rick Ferris, also known as Big Daddy, said that Atty. Gen. Bill Schuette's allegation that the compassion center violated the Michigan Medical Marihuana Act is unfounded. "He’s not slowed down since he got in office; he's not going to stop now," Ferris said. "We are definitely targeted. This is a civil matter. For him to jump in a civil matter, this is ridiculous." Schuette and Chesterfield Township have united in attempt to shut down Big Daddy's, claiming it's a public nuisance. Macomb County Circuit Court Judge John Foster initially…

The embattled business is leaving Macomb County within the next couple weeks.
After Chesterfield Township and the Michigan Attorney General's Office won the legal battle to shut down dispensary operations at Big Daddy's Hydroponics, the controversial business said Thursday it's leaving Chesterfield Township. Within the next couple weeks, hydroponic supplies will be moved to different Big Daddy's buildings and the township business, along with its currently closed medical marijuana distribution center, will seek to relocate outside of Macomb County. “We will find another community that’s friendly to us,” Big Daddy's spokesman Rick Thompson said. "We can’t stay where we’re not wanted – even though the people wanted us, the police did not.” The court ruling would have allowed the business to continue to sell …

The township and state's attempt to shut down Big Daddy's Hydroponics will forge on in Macomb County Circuit Court.
The legal battle between Chesterfield and Big Daddy's Hydroponics will continue after the Chesterfield Township Board of Trustees unanimously agreed Monday night following closed session to turn down a settlement offer by the medical marijuana dispensary. Rick Thompson, Big Daddy's shareholder and Michigan Medical Marijuana Magazine Editor, spoke before the board prior to the closed session and expressed that medical marijuana users "are not criminals" and that the legal battle is costing the township more and more money as the court case continues. Board members were advised by the township attorney not to speak about the decision after the meeting. Specifics about the settlement offer were not disclosed. "Sixty-three percent of people in…

Protesters flocked to downtown Mount Clemens Thursday as Chesterfield Township and the Michigan Attorney General aim to close Big Daddy's Hydroponics on Gratiot.
Outside Macomb County Circuit Court Thursday, medical marijuana protesters gripped signs with slogans like "Fight crime, not sick people" and "It's my right to a quality of life!" They passionately chanted phrases, such as "Safer than the streets;" "Who's law? My law!" and "Vote green." Inside the Mount Clemens courthouse that afternoon, Chesterfield Township and the Michigan Attorney General's Office tried to a make a case that Big Daddy's Hydroponics should be shut down on grounds it violates township ordinances and is a public nuisance. Among its roles, Big Daddy's serves as a medical marijuana dispensary, also referred to as a compassion center. "I believe that the commercial compassion club is not something we want in the township," …

On heels of Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette joining Chesterfield Township's lawsuit against the medical marijuana dispensary on Gratiot, Big Daddy's says it's fighting back.
Walking into Big Daddy's Hydroponics in Chesterfield Township, you might not guess the business is at the center of a high-profile lawsuit over the legality of medical marijuana dispensaries in Michigan. Merchandise like cultivating supplies and bongs are available for purchase while rows of medical marijuana advocacy literature pepper shelves. But get Big Daddy Management Group shareholder and Michigan Medical Marijuana Magazine Editor Rick Thompson talking about the business' mission to sell medical marijuana, and he'll say they're not just blowing smoke.
