Increased Security in New Baltimore, Chesterfield Schools May be New Normal

Heightened security measures implemented by L'Anse Creuse, Anchor Bay and New Haven districts following the Sandy Hook Elementary shooting are expected to remain in place through early 2013.

Three weeks, including a holiday break, have passed in New Baltimore and Chesterfield schools since the mass shooting in Newtown, CT, but security remains at an all-time high in all local districts. Like countless districts across the state and country, L'Anse Creuse, New Haven and Anchor Bay schools heightened their security in the days following the shooting. In L'Anse Creuse Public Schools, the majority of those measures are due to remain in place until further notice. A full list of safety measures is available on the district website, but key policies include:  Prior to the holiday break, L'Anse Creuse ordered all main entrances at elementary and junior high schools to be locked during the school day as well as interior classroom …

Funeral Home Director Pleads Guilty to Contract Fraud

John Olszewski operated funeral homes in New Haven, New Baltimore and Richmond.

A local funeral home director accused of contract fraud pleaded guilty this month in Macomb County Circuit Court. John Olszewski, who previously ran businesses in New Haven, New Baltimore and Richmond, pleaded guilty to one count of contract conversion before the case went to trial. The plea deal calls for probation and for him to pay roughly $12,000 in restitution to multiple people. A second count was dismissed under the deal that does not call for jail time, according to court files and his attorney. Sentencing is scheduled for Oct. 30 in the Mount Clemens courthouse. The case stems from business dealings at Duncan-Olszewski Funeral Home in New Haven. New Haven police accused Olszewski of failing to set up escrow funds for pre-paid …

Lightning Cause of New Baltimore House Fire

Neighbors helped get a 95-year-old woman out of the home, according to New Baltimore Fire Chief Ken Lawfield.

New Baltimore fire officials said Friday that lightning was the cause of an extensive Thursday afternoon house fire. It's believed the fire started in the attic around 2 p.m. at the spacious brick house on Danielle Street in the 25 Mile and Ridge Road area in the Hidden Ridge subdivision. Since the fire ignited in an enclosed space, the fire wasn't immediately visible, New Baltimore Fire Deputy Chief Brian Bilinski said. By 3:12 p.m., neighbors alerted the fire department to the second-alarm blaze that drew city firefighters as well as crews from New Haven and Chesterfield, Lenox and Ira townships. Before firefighters arrived, however, quick-thinking neighbors who saw smoke got a 95-year-old woman out of the home, New Baltimore Fire Chief …

I just want to acknowledge that my mom Joyce Compo did go in after the man who is the neighbor of the homeowner that went in. She had helped the man get the 95 year old lady down as well. I Amy Basacchi was the one who had called 911 before anyone. I was out in front of my home across the street from the home. I saw the smoke and smelled it and had run in my home to call 911. So there was four of…   more ›

Anchor Bay Makes MME, ACT Strides Compared to 2011

Data from the Michigan Department of Education shows the Class of 2013 at Anchor Bay, L'Anse Creuse and New Haven did better on the Michigan Merit Exam than their predecessors.

The majority of Chesterfield and New Baltimore area students continue to score above state average on the Michigan Merit Exam, but the number of students actually passing the exam suggests there is much work to be done, according to a report released by the Michigan Department of Education this morning. The performance of students this year takes into account a test that is more difficult to pass, based on new cut scores implemented last year by the state. Across the state, the largest gains on the MME occurred in reading and writing, where reading saw an average one-year increase of 3 percent and writing an average one-year increase of 2.5 percent. These increases show roughly 56 percent of tested students are proficient in reading and 50…

The PTO at New Haven’s Endeavour Elementary will dance the night away at ‘Mom Prom’ Friday, Feb. 24 to raise money for the district.

Dozens of local moms will soon be primping in anticipation for the “Totally Awesome Mom Prom,” a 1980s-themed party aimed at raising money for New Haven Community schools. The fundraiser, organized by New Haven’s Endeavour Elementary PTO, is set for 7 p.m.-midnight Friday, Feb. 24 at Salt River on 23 Mile Road. New Baltimore to Bid for Structural Engineers to Explore Safety of Historic Building

A funeral home business is interested in tearing down the structure on Main and Maria streets.

New Baltimore officials are looking for an expert to examine the safety of a historic building proposed for demolition. Verheyden Funeral Homes has expressed interest to city officials in tearing down the former Christie-Olszewski Funeral Home on Main and Maria streets to build a new funeral home on the parcel. The city became the owner of the now-boarded building after Christie-Olszewski defaulted on taxes. On Wednesday, Mayor Larry Smith said the city will likely seek approximately three bids from engineers who could determine whether the building is structurally sound. City officials would then award the project to the most qualified, low bidder to examine the building at an undetermined time. "We got to find a structural engineer to …
