Chesterfield Township Supervisor Michael Lovelock withdrew community sponsorship due to liability concerns. The cruise is slated to take place again this year.
The North Gratiot Cruise is driving forward without Chesterfield Township's sponsorship or name affiliation. Supervisor Michael Lovelock recommended Tuesday night that the township discontinue sponsorship of the popular cruise. "If we don't sponsor it, we don't have any liability for this cruise," Lovelock told the Board of Trustees. "That's why I'm recommending we take our name off it." The board majority, however, approved the cruise for 2013 and authorized township departments to invoice the cruise committee for any costs associated with the event, such as extra police presence. Cruise spokesman John Johnson said the township's move not to associate its name or sponsor it will not prevent the event from taking place. "As long as we can …

A check presentation ceremony took place Monday night at Chesterfield Township offices.
The North Gratiot Cruise raised thousands of dollars for two police K-9 units. Cruise officials presented checks to township police for $7,500 and the Macomb County Sheriff's Office for $2,500 at the Monday night Board of Trustees meeting. Township police Lt. Charles Verschaeve and Sheriff Tony Wickersham accepted oversized checks, with a county K-9 cop and handler present. However, the cruise committee will actually hold onto the money raised for Chesterfield police, rolling it into a savings account for the K-9 unit along with future cruise donations, Verschaeve said after the meeting. That move follows township police and officials financial decision not to replace the last dog when he retires in the near future. However, the township …

The car festivities kicked off at noon Sunday from Hall to 23 Mile on Gratiot.
Three miles of car-lover festivities consumed Chesterfield Township on Sunday during the North Gratiot Cruise. Shiny, restored classics with their hoods propped up lined business parking lots along the highly traveled stretch while pedestrians admired them up close. Regular motorists puttered through cruise traffic that encompassed anything from the rare to quirky. Local businesses joined the hoopla by offering music, entertainment and their own car displays. Township Supervisor Michael Lovelock called it a "great day for a cruise. The weather is great. People are coming out. ... They're coming from all over the place." Lovelock, who was at the event headquarters in the former Kmart parking lot, said he expected anywhere from 5,000 to 8,…

Chesterfield Township Supervisor Michael Lovelock cautions residents the township board may not approve reinstatement of K-9 Unit.
Although North Gratiot Cruise organizers plan to raise money for the K-9 unit in Chesterfield Township, community officials can't guarantee the unit's existence. "The cruise is great for the people of Chesterfield," township Supervisor Michael Lovelock said Wednesday. "But, I just don't want to see people thinking this money is going to go to the K-9 unit until the board makes that decision." Lovelock and police Chief Bruce Smith have said the Board of Trustees told cruise organizers that there were no plans to reinstate the unit once the last police dog retires in the near future. However, North Gratiot Cruise Chairman John Vecchio said Monday the cruise foundation aims to donate proceeds from the Aug. 26 event to the township and Macomb …

The Gratiot car fest from Hall Road to 23 Mile is scheduled for Aug. 26 in the township.
The North Gratiot Cruise is making a comeback this summer and organizers are hoping it will be better than ever. "This is really our first year regrouping," North Gratiot Cruise Chairman John Vecchio said Monday. "I think this is going to be the biggest cruise that we had in Chesterfield." The cruise hit the brakes the past two years due to a lack of sponsorships and organizational manpower. This year, the event is getting into gear with a new planning committee of local community leaders, business owners and residents along with help from Macomb Business Alliance President John Johnson. A parade of classic cars is expected to leave the Walmart plaza Aug. 26, kicking off the cruise noon to 6 p.m. from Hall to 23 Mile on Gratiot. Raising …

I understand that the pd gets the funds but my point was that the funds can be spent on anything that the heads of the department sees fit. If the public was donating towards the hope of keeping or reinstating the K9 unit, as advertised, that should be where the line gets drawn. Since the amount being donated is $7,500.00 my suggestion would be hold an "Open House" in which the chief publicly …   more ›
