On the heels of one of the worst school shootings in American history, New Baltimore-Chesterfield Patch readers shared their thoughts on school security. Readers commented on the site and on our Facebook page when asked if local districts, like Anchor Bay, L'Anse Creuse and New Haven Community Schools, should re-think security after the mass shooting Friday in Connecticut. The conversation in New Baltimore turned fowl this week, as City Council rejected an ordinance that allowed chicken-keeping in the community. Among city officials concerns: Chickens could create food-borne illnesses, loud noises, declining property values and attract rats that carry disease. Longtime resident and former Councilman John Dupray, who raised and slaughtered chickens as a teen, told council "if you have chickens, you have chicken feed. If you have chicken feed, you have rats. In the latest consumer news, Little Tikes announced Wednesday that more than 1.7 million additional units of its Workshop and Tool Sets have been voluntarily recalled because oversized plastic nails pose choking hazards to young children. The recall comes on the heels of a recall in August 2009 of about 1.6 million of the toy workshop sets and trucks with the same toy nails. Topic: In light of past recalls from numerous manufacturers due to lead in painted toys to toxic metals in children's jewelry, how do you determine what's safe for your kids?
