Patch Readers Raise $5,512 to Fight Hunger in Metro Detroit

The Patch Fights Hunger initiative spurred 119 people in 30 Patch cities to donate to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season.

More than 16,500 men, women and children in Metro Detroit will have a warm, healthy meal provided by Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season—and it's all thanks to Patch readers. Throughout the month of November, 30 Michigan Patch communities, including Chesterfield and New Baltimore, took part in the Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive, raising funds for Gleaners. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and in the month of giving thanks, Patch partnered with the nonprofit to start the first-ever virtual food drive. Patch readers from across the region "shopped" Gleaners' virtual store and saw exactly what their donation would buy for a person or family in need. How much did each …

New Baltimore Pastor Helps in Hurricane Sandy Relief, Feeding Hungry in Chesterfield

North Shore Pastor Chris Steinle is a regular volunteer with nonprofit group Poured Out.

Every third Wednesday of the month, North Shore Church volunteers and Gleaners Community Food Bank help local families stock their fridges. On Nov. 21, the day before Thanksgiving, 150 families in need received chicken, apples, potatoes, apple juice, ice cream and more groceries at Anchor Bay Middle School South in Chesterfield Township, according to the church. But, it's not just local families that North Shore Pastor Chris Steinle helps feed. Steinle, a dedicated volunteer with nonprofit Poured Out, was in Haiti when Hurricane Sandy hit. He and other Poured Out volunteers regularly visit the country to help provide clean drinking water and other aid. "We rode the storm out through Haiti and we turned around and came home and responded to…

This Thanksgiving, Help Patch Fight Hunger in Michigan

We want to give more to Gleaners Community Food Bank this holiday season. Shop our virtual food drive by Nov. 25 to join the fight.

The season of giving isn't over yet—so why should our Patch Fights Hunger virtual food drive end so soon? As such, we've extended our drive supporting Gleaners Community Food Bank until Nov. 25. On Thanksgiving, a day when every American family gives thanks for the things in their life, most of us will enjoy a feast with our families. But there are still many people who don't have enough to eat—including one out of every four children. Gleaners distributes 100,000 meals each day to hungry people in southeast Michigan, and we want to help them with their goal by raising $10,000 through the Patch Fights Hunger online food drive. Ninety-four cents of every dollar you donate goes directly toward feeding hungry people in your own communities. …

Children Are Hungry in Chesterfield Township, And You Can Help

More than 300,000 children in southeast Michigan don't get enough to eat, negatively impacting health, learning and more.

In our land of plenty, hunger continues to be problem. One in four Michigan children lives in poverty, and that puts them at risk of not getting enough food. In Macomb County, more residents received food assistance each year from 2001 to 2010. There were 115,081 county residents getting food assistance in 2009-10, which was up from 86,820 in 2008-09, according to the Michigan Department of Human Services.  Nearly half the people Gleaners Community Food Bank helps—at least 40 percent— are children younger than 18. Sadly, that need is far from being filled. Gleaners actively works to eradicate hunger, targeting a five-county area— Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Wayne—in southeast Michigan. It provides 45 million pounds of food each…
