Brave Polar Bear Plungers Conquer Anchor Bay

The annual Polar Bear Plunge capped off the three-day New Baltimore Lions Club Winterfest fundraiser in downtown New Baltimore.

Late January cold and ice didn't stop Polar Bear Plungers from braving frigid Anchor Bay waters Sunday for charity. Defying reason and comfortable body temperatures, teams of plungers eased onto the icy lake to dip into a makeshift pool for the New Baltimore Lions Club Winterfest fundraiser. The annual event drew a large crowd that spilled onto the pier and shoreline at Burke Park. See our photo gallery and video here. Did you participate in the Polar Bear Plunge? What Polar Bear Plungers Can Expect Today

The third and last day of the New Baltimore Lions Club Winterfest is Sunday.

Polar Bear Plungers are bracing themselves today for a wintry dip in Lake St. Clair. Unlike last year, when plungers ran into Anchor Bay, the iced-over lake brings back a makeshift pool amid vast sheets of ice. That's reminiscent of the 2011 Winterfest, when participants dipped in and out of icy waters from a carved-out section of the lake. New Baltimore Fire Chief Ken Lawfield says firefighters will be present to ensure safety on the lake. The New Baltimore Lions Club, which puts on Winterfest, will have warming tents for plungers before and after the dive. There was roughly 10-12 inches of ice on Anchor Bay by late last week, Lawfield said. Outdoor temperatures during the plunge are expected to reach a high of 29 degrees with a south …

VIDEO: Polar Bear Plungers Take to Lake for Charity

The annual dip into Anchor Bay took place Sunday during the New Baltimore Lions' Club three-day Winterfest in downtown New Baltimore.

Some brave souls rushed the lake Sunday for a good cause during the annual Polar Bear Plunge in New Baltimore.  With snow falling, roughly 200 plungers charged Anchor Bay from Burke Park during the 19th annual Winterfest in the city's downtown.  "It only hurts for a little while," said seasoned plunger Earl Dunn, 49 of Chesterfield Township.  His wife, Theresa Dunn, 44, admitted nerves were settling in before the plunge. But she said they subsided in time for her to join her husband and 17-year-old son, Robert, an Anchor Bay High student on the Air Force Junior ROTC plunge team spearheaded by Col. Jeff Carrothers. "He only has one year left of high school, so I wanted to do something with him," said Dunn, adding her son has participated …

What a great sight. I was able to share the plunge with my family all over the country. I'm the one who went in twice. It was on my bucket list before I turned 70. Elaine Pace   more ›
