Federal Judge Orders Citizenship Checkbox Removed From Michigan Ballots

Michigan Secretary of State Ruth Johnson said she ordered the citizenship verification to prevent voter fraud.

A citizenship checkbox ordered by Secretary of State Ruth Johnson will not appear on Michigan ballots in November, a federal judge ruled today.  According to a report filed by Michigan Public Radio, U.S. District Judge Paul Borman ruled that the checkbox "slows the voting process, is confusing and is a burden on the right to vote." In a press release issued Friday evening, Service Employees International Union (SEIU) explained that a voting rights coalition, including the Clerk of Ingham County, three registered voters, the Michigan State Council and Local 517M of the SEIU and the ACLU of Michigan, filed the suit. FYI... The voter registration deadline for Michigan is Oct. 9. Here’s information on how you can register in Dearborn in time for the Nov. 6 elections: •Head to the Dearborn City Clerk's office, located on the first floor of Dearborn City Hall. Michigan Secretary of State Expands Online Services

The Michigan Secretary of State has expanded their website, ExpressSOS.com, making the days of waiting in line for a new driver's license a thing of the past.

The lines at the Secretary of State can be so long you often feel like you should pack a lunch before you leave the house. Now you don't even have to leave the house. The Secretary of State has expanded their website, ExpressSOS.com, to allow Michigan residents to complete even more transactions online according to a Secretary of State release. Chesterfield Secretary of State Customers Notified of Document Theft

Thousands of driver's license applications and state identification applications were stolen from branches in Chesterfield and Warren. Those affected were to be notified by mail.

The theft of thousands of personal documents at the Chesterfield Township and Warren Secretary of State branches may put numerous customers at risk for identity fraud. Requesting a formal criminal investigation by Michigan State Police into the matter, the Michigan Department of State also notified potentially affected customers by mail recently of the security breach. The precautionary measure from the state aims to alert customers of stolen driver's license applications and state identification applications  at the North Macomb PLUS Office, 51305 Gratiot and the Southwest Macomb PLUS Office at 28220 Dequindre Road. County Clerk and Secretary of State Join Forces to Aid Macomb Customers

The county clerk mobile office will visit all seven Secretary of State branch offices located in Macomb County throughout July and August to provide customers with two-in-one service.

The Macomb County Clerk’s mobile office is coming to a Secretary of State near you. Secretary of State Ruth Johnson and Macomb County Clerk Carmella Sabaugh announced Thursday that the county clerk mobile office will visit all seven Secretary of State branch offices located in Macomb County throughout July and August. The partnership is intended to serve as a one-stop shop, allowing customers access to Secretary of State and county business in a single trip.
