VIDEO: Ste. Claire Voyageurs Show How Early Settlers Lived

The Chesterfield Township Historical Society hosted the event June 9-10 at the historical village grounds.

The Ste. Claire Voyageurs spent the weekend at the Chesterfield Township historical village, educating the public about the fur trade era through re-enactments including the wearing of period clothing and teaching skills used during that time. Ste. Claire Voyageurs Bring History to Chesterfield This Weekend

The Chesterfield Township Historical Society hosts the event June 9-10 at the historical village grounds on 47275 Sugarbush.

French fur trade re-enactors, canoes, crafts and early settler stories are coming to Chesterfield Township this weekend. The St. Claire Voyageurs will educate the public about the fur trade era by wearing period clothing and teaching skills used during that time. The event is from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. June 9 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. June 10 on the Chesterfield Township historical village green, 47275 Sugarbush. Donations requested are $1 per person and $2 per family. Viewfinder: Ste. Claire Voyageurs in Chesterfield

History comes to life this weekend as group re-enacts the lifestyle of Michigan's French settlers at Chesterfield Historical Village.

The Ste. Claire Voyageurs have set up camp for the weekend at the Chesterfield Historical Village. Families were out and about Saturday to see the French settler way of life during Michigan's early years. Children could play old-fashioned games, see how food was prepared, watch a blacksmith work and learn about the area's history during this public event, which will continue from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. French Settlers Had Great Impact on Chesterfield

The Salt River inspired a settlement and township inhabitants even had their own dialect called Sugar Bush.

The first French explorers and missionaries came to the area around 1611, naming the dominant waterway Luc Ste Claire on August 12, 1687. Now called Lake St. Clair, reports vary as to how the lake received its name. Some say it was named for General Arthur St. Clair who was governor of the Northwest Territory from 1787 until 1800. But because the lake was called St. Clair since 1687, it is believed that the lake was named for the French Catholic Ste. Clair, whose feast day is Aug. 12. Ste. Claire Voyageurs Bring Colonial Times to Chesterfield

Chesterfield Township Historical Village will host the group this weekend.

Find out what it was like to live in colonial times this weekend at the Chesterfield Historical Village. Chesterfield Township Historical Society will host Ste. Claire Voyageurs at the Chesterfield Historical Village. The Voyageurs will set up encampments and do live demonstrations of how people survived during Michigan's early days. “This is the first time the Chesterfield Township Historical Society has teamed up with the Ste.
