Who's Hiring in New Baltimore? Rec Department to Look for Lifeguards

Candidates must be certified lifeguards. Training is available in a session at the Anchor Bay Aquatic Center.

It’s hardly bathing suit weather, but aspiring lifeguards should start practicing their breast strokes. New Baltimore Parks and Recreation will hire about eight lifeguards for the summer season at Burke beach in the near future. “It would be a great summer job for college kids,” Recreation Director Brian Kay said Wednesday. There will be a total of about 10-12 lifeguards on various shifts, some of whom are returning from last summer, Kay said. But in order to be eligible, candidates must be certified. Anyone interested in applying who is not certified, may take the Lifeguard Certification Class that runs from noon to 4 p.m. Saturdays, April 6-June 1, except May 25, at the Anchor Bay Aquatic Center. Summer Employment Becoming More and More Difficult for Teens, Experts Say

But some Chesterfield Township and New Baltimore business owners say they are looking to hire this summer.

It's that time of year again, when school's letting out and teenagers are trying to secure their summer jobs. Whether in high school or home from college, seasonal jobs, which usually don't require much experience, attract teens who are looking to put some extra cash in their pocket over the three-month period. However, landing that job as a pool attendant or ice cream confectionist might not be as easy as it once was. According to a recent study conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, youth seasonal employment has been on a downward trend for more than 10 years. The findings report that just 24.9 percent of teenagers held jobs in the summer of 2011, compared with 50 percent in 2000. However, a few New Baltimore and Chesterfield …
