A majority of voters rejected increasing funding for the township police department last November.
Chesterfield Township residents may be asked again to approve increased funding for the police department, but this time with a sunset provision. “We know that a lot of people didn’t like the fact that the millage question proposal was for an unending millage increase,” Police Chief Bruce Smith said. “When we do go back there definitely will be a sunset clause on it.” It has not been determined when the matter may go back to voters or what specifically will be in the ballot language. “The department’s funded for this year, but we’re going to have to sit down with the board and make some decisions...We haven’t done that yet,” Smith said. The township fire department will start receiving additional funding in 2015 after collections on the recently passed fire millage start in December 2014, according to the fire chief.
From operating at minimum staffing levels to switching to off-brand cleaning supplies, the Chesterfield Township Fire Department has explored many options to save money. And, one recently discussed possibility was promising for Chesterfield but doesn't seem likely to come to fruition in the near future. Township Fire Chief Doug Charbonneau hoped to enter a joint-operating venture with New Baltimore Fire Department that would pool resources, such as paid-on-call firefighters and fire inspectors. Chesterfield Township police anticipate severe staff reductions if the proposed tax increase fails next month. The department will host a town hall meeting about the Nov. 6 ballot proposal at 7 p.m. Oct. 18 at L'Anse Creuse Middle School East in the township. Chesterfield Township voters will decide in November whether to approve tax increases for police and fire services. The Board of Trustees decided Wednesday to place a millage increase for police as well as a millage renewal and increase for fire on the general election ballot. The trustees unanimously agreed that the higher taxes are needed to keep the departments afloat in light of decreased revenue from property taxes. Agreed they will try to sneak on a ballot where no one shows up except the people on the inner circle, like they did with the aquatic center, DIA millage and others. Start a ballot drive to hire the sherrifs dept at half the cost(like in Macomb) and I would even help gather signatures. End this complaining once and for all.
