One hundred local families had Thanksgiving dinners this year, thanks to VOX Church members and volunteers. The church handed out baskets containing turkey, gravy, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn, green beans, cranberries, onions, rolls and a $10 gift card on Nov. 18, according to VOX. The Chesterfield Township-based church has services in L'Anse Creuse High School North in Macomb Township.

Black Friday is slowly seeping into Thanksgiving, with several big box stores slated to open their doors at 8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 22 in preparation for the biggest shopping day of the year. Macy's, Kohl's, Best Buy and Parisian will open at midnight Black Friday, while a few stores such as Target, Kmart and Walmart begin their sales Thanksgiving night. Although the State of Michigan’s Unemployment Insurance Agency will be closed for two days next week, unemployed workers can still contact the agency’s automated MARVIN system throughout the week to claim their unemployment benefits. The UIA will be closed to observe the Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 22, and Nov. 23. Unemployed workers claiming benefits in Michigan must contact MARVIN by telephone or online once every two weeks to certify that they are unemployed and meet the eligibility requirements for unemployment benefits.
