L’Anse Creuse Public Schools Board of Education unanimously voted Monday night to appoint Charles Eslinger, filling a vacancy left by Treasurer Jeffrey DiPascale, according to the district. The decision comes after the school board interviewed five candidates for the position that expires Dec. 31, 2014. “All five candidates were remarkable people and would have brought something unique and special to the board,” Board President Kenneth Hoover said in a prepared statement. “However, in the end, Mr. Eslinger’s previous experience is instrumental to the hard work that lies ahead.” Eslinger was a L'Anse Creuse board member from November 2007 to December 2012. Chesterfield Township candidates running in the November election squared off Thursday during debates at Municipal Offices on Sugarbush.
Attracting business and funding police and fire were priorities Thursday during Chesterfield Township candidate debates. In a series of taped segments in municipal offices, township candidates spoke of their accomplishments and their goals if elected in November. The Anchor Bay Chamber of Commerce and The Voice newspaper sponsored the event moderated by Brian Powers. Challenger Cindy Berry called for transparency in government and reduced spending while incumbent Jan Uglis emphasized the need to lure businesses to the community. "I believe we can lower taxes and still provide the same services," Berry said. Uglis said she's been working with township planning and zoning employees to help bring in business. Candidates Marvin Stepnak, a Republican, and Patrick Militello, a Democrat, won't advance to general election.
Chesterfield Township incumbent candidate for treasurer Linda Hartman and newcomer Kathy Elliott will advance to the November election. Hartman, a Democrat, received the most votes with 60.5 percent--or 1,476. Elliott, a Republican, followed with 55.9--or 1,371--with fellow Republican Marvin Stepnak earning 44.1 percent--or 1,081--and Democrat Patrick Militello getting 39.5 percent--or 962 votes, according to unofficial Tuesday night county election results with 100 percent of the precincts reporting. If re-elected, Hartman told Patch that she aims to "continue to enhance the use of technology and promote economic development and land-use planning, among others, to keep our community vibrant." Macomb County voters will take to the polls Aug. 7 to determine who will advance to the Nov. 6 general election. Below are the positions up for election and the candidates who are seeking office: Sheriff Anthony Wickersham and challenger Greg Stone comprise the Democrat and most recognizable candidates for lead law enforcement role.
