Tars' Jones Makes Mark with Spartans

Anchor Bay graduate Taiwan Jones will take the field for Michigan State when it plays Georgia in the Outback Bowl on Jan. 2.

As a true freshman, Taiwan Jones has proved a big hit for the Michigan State football team. Jones, who graduated from Anchor Bay and was a basketball and football star for the Tars, has played in all 13 games for the Spartans this year, and he will be in uniform on Monday when MSU takes on Georgia in the Outback Bowl. Jones has registered 18 tackles playing on special teams and as a backup linebacker for MSU this season. His best game came against Indiana on Nov. 19 when he made four tackles and broke up a pass. Jones also has made an impact in practice. Wide receiver B.J. Cunningham told Joe Rexrode of the Lansing State Journal that Jones has earned the nickname “The Terminator” and has gained a reputation for his hard hits in practice. …

Dream Comes True For Anchor Bay's Jones As He Heads To MSU

Jones makes it official—Anchor Bay standout signs to play football at Michigan State.

When Anchor Bay standout Taiwan Jones took the football field for the first time back in his freshmen year, he had no idea it would lead to one of prep football’s most revered days–national signing day, Wednesday morning. “I had no clue,” Jones said. “I just wanted to play, that’s all. This is very exciting and it’s a dream come true.” Jones not only played–he excelled on the gridiron for the Tars, and turned heads with his play all over the area. College scouts from Big Ten schools and other Division I conferences came calling on the 6-foot-3 inch standout, and eventually, after sorting through the offers, Jones settled on Michigan State University and verbally committed to the Spartans back in March of 2010.
