History Lessons, Blood Donations and Football Top List

Children will learn about Martin Luther King Jr., donors will give blood, music lovers will savor sounds and more.

From commemorating Martin Luther King Jr. to rocking out at a local tavern, events in Chesterfield Township and New Baltimore this week are sure to offer variety to the young and old.

  • On Monday, children in third- to sixth-grades are invited to to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Beginning at 4 p.m., attendees will hear a story honoring the civil rights legend and also do a craft to celebrate the holiday. Registration is not required. For more information, call the library, at 586-725-0273. The library is at at 36480 Main St. in New Baltimore.
  • Participate in the longstanding tradition of donating blood to the American Red Cross. Donations will be taken from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at , 49655 Jefferson Ave. in Chesterfield Township. Childcare will be available. Make a reservation or contact a Red Cross representative, at 586-949-1023.
  • Listen to a personal World War II story during a New Baltimore Historical Society presentation titled “A Very Special Soldier: A Tribute to a Father” scheduled at 7 p.m. Thursday. The event will be held at the , 36223 Alfred St. in New Baltimore. Cost is $1 per person. Call 586-725-0909 for more information.  
  • On Saturday, locals ages 21 and older will gather at to welcome classic American rock band Act of Midnight. The live performance will begin at about 9 p.m. and feature new drink specials. There is no cover charge and reservations are not required. The tavern is located at 27900 21 Mile in Chesterfield Township. For more information, call 586-949-5260.
  • On Sunday, the Dad’s Clubs of De La Salle Collegiate High School and Regina High School will host Championship Sunday open to the public at , 46601 Gratiot Ave. The event will begin at 2 p.m. for people ages 18 and older to enjoy American Football Conference (AFC) and National Football Conference (NFC) football game broadcasts beginning at 3 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. An Italian-themed buffet will include a bar and a silent auction. Raffles will also take place. Representatives from Budweiser will be on hand for  complimentary T-shirts and hats.
    “In recent years we celebrated the Super Bowl, but this year we decided to try something new,” said Mark Zuccaro, member of the De La Salle Collegiate High School Dad’s Club and owner and manager of Zuccaro Banquets and Catering. “We will have 10-foot projector screens to watch the game and food available all day.”
    Championship Sunday tickets cost $35 with proceeds to benefit both participating schools. Reservations are recommended. For more information, call 586-949-7213.
