Chesterfield Township Board Votes Against Police Layoffs in 2013

The township board meets at 7 p.m. June 3 in Municipal Offices at 47275 Sugarbush.

The Chesterfield Township Board of Trustees voted 7-0 Monday night against laying off police employees this year, according to township officials.

The agenda for the 7 p.m. regularly scheduled meeting stated the board would rule on the police layoff moratorium. Township officials have been debating how to cope with an expected police fund deficit after a majority of voters turned down a proposal to raise taxes for the force in November.

Last month, a board majority rejected a work group study proposal for limited layoffs. The group's proposal followed township Supervisor Michael Lovelock suggestion for approximately 14 staff reductions by seniority. The board enacted a moratorium for 90 days soon after while examining the budget and ways to limit employee cuts.

Some township officials previously discussed putting another police tax proposal before voters in the near future, with provisions. Among them was implementing a sunset clause, which the original ballot didn't have.
