Accused Mount Clemens Fireworks Shooter to Have Prelim Exam This Month

An 18-year-old Warren man accused of shooting another man at the Mount Clemens fireworks will have a preliminary exam this month.

Demitrus Ludaway is scheduled for a preliminary exam at 8:30 a.m. July 16 at 41B District Court in Clinton Township before Judge Linda Davis, according to the court. Ludaway faces charges of assault with intent to murder, armed robbery and felony firearm, police said.

He was lodged in Macomb County Jail in lieu of a $75,000 cash/surety bond.

Around 10:35 p.m. Friday, several eyewitnesses say Ludaway shot a 19-year-old Detroit man in the leg in the area of North Main Street and Market, Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said. 

between Ludaway and the victim over a pair of Cartier sunglasses that the victim says Ludaway was attempting to steal. According to statements made by the victim, the suspect took the Cartier sunglasses from his face. When he approached the suspect to get the glasses back, Ludaway shot him in the leg and fled on foot, police said.

The Cartier sunglasses were later found in Ludaway's pocket, police said.

Sheriff's deputies patrolling the festival quickly arrested Ludaway and the victim was taken to McLaren Medical Center to be treated for a gun shot wound to the leg. Wickersham said he is expected to make a full recovery.

The victim and two witnesses to the shooting have positively identified Ludaway as the shooter and deputies found the weapon, a .38 Caliber Colt revolver, near the scene of the shooting. Police say the Colt revolver was never registered.

Ludaway has no previous criminal history.
