Crime Blotter: Suspected Drugs Claimed as Candy

Man tells police drugs were candy

When New Baltimore police stopped a 43-year-old man outside who appeared intoxicated the night of Jan. 19, he suddenly removed substances from his pocket and rapidly swallowed them, according to a report.

The man told the officer the white rocks he aggressively chewed were candy. However, the substance started to thicken and become chalky in his mouth and he had trouble ingesting them, police said.

Police say the man might have taken the bus from Warren or Harrison Township to buy narcotics from an undisclosed apartment in the 23 Mile and Jefferson area with a history of drug activity, police said.

The man refused to spit out the substance, as directed by police. Paramedics checked him out soon after because of his slurred speech and sleepiness. They found him to have high blood pressure and a rapid heart rate. He was taken to Mount Clemens Regional Medical Center in Mount Clemens for evaluation.

Tests of the substance at the scene were inconclusive because of cold weather, but seemed to indicate it was some sort of prescription pill. Further lab tests were to be done and he may face charges of possession of synthetic narcotics. The man had a long criminal history that includes attempted murder and carjacking, police said.

Guns stolen from car

A New Baltimore resident reported two guns stolen from his vehicle parked in his driveway, .

The resident left three long guns in his vehicle to dry after pheasant hunting the evening of Jan. 28. But he noticed that two of the guns were missing the following day, police said.

The weapons, a Charles Daly shotgun and Daisy Red Ryder BB gun, have a total value of $300 to $400, the report states.

Clothes snatched from laundry room

An tenant reported Jan. 27 someone stole two baskets of children's clothing valued at $200 from the communal laundry room, said.

The theft, which occurred between 6 a.m. and noon, was the second time in two weeks that someone had snatched the tenant's clothes. Apartment management told police cameras are not in the laundry room and all tenants have keys to enter it. 

No suspects were known at the time.
