Crime Blotter: Man Smoked Marijuana With Kids in Car

Man smoked pot in front of kids because he had 'bad day,' police say

A 24-year-old Algonac man was arrested last month for marijuana possession after say they learned he smoked pot in the same car as children.

Around 7 p.m. Feb. 21, police spotted a 2001 Ford van swerving over the double-yellow center line in the Green Street and County Line area. When stopped, the female driver told the officer that she hit something in the roadway although nothing was there.

According to a police report, the officer smelled marijuana and noticed the driver's boyfriend in the passenger seat had bloodshot eyes. K-9 officer Kuffs detected 10 grams of marijuana in the van that the man had allegedly purchased in Detroit.

Others in the van included the driver's children, a kindergartner and high school student, in the backseat. Police found a two marijuana cigarette butts on the floor where the young child sat, the report stated.

When asked why he smoked drugs in front of the children, the man told police he "had a bad day at work." Police notified the adults they had risked the children's safety and alerted Children's Protective Services to the matter.

Debit charges made in South Africa without cardholder consent

A Chesterfield Township woman learned someone had been making unauthorized charges with her debit card in South Africa, according to a police report.

The woman discovered the thefts in mid-February when her card was declined at a local grocery store. Upon looking into the matter, she found out that someone overseas had charged $4,900 to her account. She informed the bank that she did not make the charges and closed her account, said.

Pizza deliveryman left out in the cold

A Chesterfield Township man didn't mind his dinner manners when a pizza deliveryman arrived at his condo Feb. 12 off 23 Mile Road, according to a police report.

The customer had placed a pizza order for $24.90, but failed to fork over the dough when the food arrived. Instead, he grabbed the pizza from the deliveryman, quipped that he already paid with a credit card and closed the door. The customer, who smelled of alcohol, did not return to the door when the driver knocked, police said.

Police arrived at the address soon after, but no one answered despite several lights on inside. The potential fraud under false pretenses case was handed over to detectives.
