Jaws of Life Used to Remove Young Children Trapped in Car in Chesterfield Township

Two separate, multi-vehicle crashes took place Tuesday evening in Chesterfield Township.

Two young children and an adult family member were taken to the hospital this evening after a multi-vehicle crash on 23 Mile Road, according to Chesterfield Township police.

The children, described by police as infants, were trapped inside the vehicle, leading emergency responders to cut the roof with the Jaws of Life. They are not believed to have suffered serious injuries at this time, police said.

The crash took place around 5 p.m. Tuesday in front of Rosie O'Grady's when the car carrying the children was rear-ended by another vehicle, propelling the struck vehicle into two other cars, Officer Jason Brockdorff said that night.

Further details were not immediately available.

The crash on 23 Mile was followed by a five-car pileup on Interstate 94 about an hour later, prompting the closure of eastbound lanes near the 21 Mile ramp while investigators worked the scene. The freeway has since reopened.

The accident at rush hour happened when a car hit another vehicle on the eastbound lane. The impact caused the struck vehicle to spin and crash into a vehicle head-on. Other vehicles were also involved. No one was seriously injured but one man was transported to a nearby hospital for minor injuries, Brockdorff said.
