Police: New Baltimore Driver Who Fled Fatal Crash Was Intoxicated

The 40-year-old suspect was arraigned Tuesday on multiple charges, including a third-offense drunken driving.

A New Baltimore man accused of was driving under the influence on a suspended license, police said Wednesday.

James Gill, 40, was charged Tuesday in 72nd District Court in Marine City with operating while intoxicated causing death, driving while license suspended causing death, leaving the scene of a serious injury accident and third-offense operating while intoxicated, according to the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office.

"The charges stem from a August 12th crash which saw Gill cross the centerline of Dixie Highway in Ira Township and hit head-on a motorcycle driven by Timothy Clore of Algonac," the Sheriff's Office stated in a news release.

Clore, 49 of Algonac, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gill fled the accident scene, eventually ditching his damaged pickup and escaping to his home on Baltimore Street in New Baltimore, police said.

The Sheriff's Office, , and Michigan State Police arrived at the home and arrested him without incident.

Gill is being held at St. Clair County Intervention and Detention Center in lieu of a $500,000 cash/surety bond. He is scheduled for a preliminary exam Aug. 22 before Judge Michael Hulewicz in Marine City.
