Nearly 100 Snow-Covered Cars Tagged by Police

Chesterfield Township police have cracked down on car owners whose vehicles obstruct snow plows.

Nearly 1o0 cars on public streets in Chesterfield Township had something other than snow on them in the past couple weeks: An orange sticker left by police.

The tag marked 48 hours for car owners to move their snow-covered vehicle from its position in order for snow plows to get to work. Several of the cars that were not moved within that time frame were towed, police said.

"It creates a real traffic hazard," Chief Bruce Smith told the Board of Trustees Monday night. "Fire trucks, school buses and such have trouble getting down those streets."

Smith announced officers would crack down on idle vehicles before last week's snow storm. Car owners who don't get take the necessary action must pay towing and impound fees.

The chief also cautioned residents with fire hydrants on their properties to dig them out from the snow in order for fire crews to quickly locate them if needed. While there have not been any issues so far this winter with buried hydrants, Smith said it only takes one hidden hydrant to pose danger in an emergency.
