New Baltimore to Hold Public Hearing on Tax Proposal

A public hearing regarding the property tax increase proposal is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Monday at in New Baltimore.

Under the budget proposal, taxes will rise by .273 from the 2011 millage of 14.94, meaning households with taxable values of $100,000 will have annual payments of $4,174. That tax rate would be divided into the winter and summer tax bills, with more charged in the summer than in winter. It also factors in the recently for the aquatic center, according to the city.

The hearing will be held immediately before the New Baltimore City Council considers adopting the proposed 2012-13 budget. It does not require a public vote because residents previously approved those bond rates, Treasurer Jeanne Bade said.

The city's general operating and library mills are to remain the same under the proposed budget at 9.82 mills and 1.34 mills, respectively. However, the street debt mills and water debt mills have risen under the proposal. The increase is attributed to annual rates that fluctuate based on housing values and bond schedules, she said.
