Township Continues Storm Water Program

Council approves Treasurer's Office upgrade, Relay for Life and garden tent at Monday night meeting.

The Board of Trustees meeting on Monday brought forth busy work to prepare for spring.

In accordance with state laws, the township regulates storm water runoff to ensure healthy watershed levels for communities and school districts.

On Monday, the township approved the next step of the project called Phase II Regulations. Phase II requires that the township meets all watershed regulations instituted by the state by developing a watershed management plan to keep storm water clean once it enters local creeks and lakes.

Some efforts to preserve water include precautions for residents, such as not cleaning lawn mowers over storm drains or using excess fertilizer. Phase II carries a projected cost of $6,800. The township’s Department of Public Works bid out the project and selected Anderson, Eckstein and Westrick, Inc. of Shelby Township. The proposed permit agreement will last through Jan. 31, 2012.

The council unanimously approved a request by Kroger grocery store at 23 Mile and Altman to erect a temporary outdoor tent in its parking lot. The tent will measure 20-by-40 feet and be used to sell garden and patio equipment from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day from April 24-July 4. Kroger store manager Stephen Armstrong said the tent and any outdoor displays would not take up more than 20 parking spaces.

At the previous board meeting, members expressed concern over whether the tent would infringe on limited space at the busy store slated for an addition.

“If the phone starts ringing off the hook and people start asking, ‘Why did you allow it?,’ we will be forced to take the tent down,” township supervisor Michael Lovelock said.

If Lovelock’s office receives between two and three complaint calls per day for a total of 30 days, Kroger will be required to disassemble the tent.

Council also approved a request form the township Treasurer’s Office to replace cabinetry and counter space in the treasurer's office. The project will include installing a new portion of cabinetry to match existing units in the office. No high-grade materials will be used.

Quality Lumber in Richmond made the lowest bid for the job at $5,450. According to trustees, the township will use in-house electricians to complete electrical work.

Finally council members agreed to a request sent by The American Caner Society to host a 5K walk/run for Chesterfield Relay for Life. The event will take place from 10 a.m. May 21 to 10 a.m. May 22 at L’Anse Creuse Middle School East. For more information, visit http://patch.com/buTkl
